Pro tips

3 bundles per square. Standard architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles cover ~33 sq ft per bundle — 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft). Some heavyweight bundles cover less; check the wrapper.

Architectural beats 3-tab. Architectural shingles cost only $10-$30 more per square but last 10+ years longer and look dramatically better. 3-tab is essentially obsolete for primary homes.

Skip the tear-off, void the warranty. Roofing over existing shingles voids most manufacturer warranties, adds 5-7 lbs/sq ft of weight, and reduces new roof life by 25%. Always tear off.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
Assuming 6/12 pitch (pitch multiplier 1.118): 2,000 × 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft of actual roof. That's 22.4 squares. With 10% waste: 24.6 squares × 3 bundles = 74 bundles.
Asphalt shingle cost per square?
3-tab: $90-$120/square. Architectural: $100-$150/square. Designer/luxury: $150-$200/square. Add $150-$300/square for professional install.
How long do asphalt shingles last?
3-tab: 15-20 years. Architectural: 25-30 years. Designer: 30-50 years with manufacturer warranties up to lifetime. Real-world life depends on climate, ventilation, and installation quality.
Best time of year to install asphalt?
Spring or fall — moderate temperatures help the shingles seal properly. Avoid extreme summer heat (shingles can be damaged by foot traffic) or winter (sealant strips won't activate). Schedule 1-2 days for a typical home.
