Pro tips
7 inches rise, 11 inches run. Standard residential code: 7-inch rise per step, 11-inch run (tread depth). Steeper or shallower is allowed but uncomfortable. Outside steps can go up to 7.5-inch rise but never higher.
Form with 2×8 boards. Build step forms from 2×8 lumber sloped slightly forward (1/4 inch per foot) for drainage. Skim with form release oil so concrete pulls cleanly.
Reinforce with rebar. Each step gets 2 horizontal #4 rebar bars. Tie them into the slab below. Steps without rebar crack along the front edges within 5 years.
Frequently asked questions
How much concrete for 3 entry steps?▾
3 steps at 7" rise × 11" run × 4 ft wide: roughly 0.7 cubic yards (about 30 × 80 lb bags). The calculator gives exact based on your dimensions.
Steps separately or with the stoop?▾
Pour stoop and steps in one continuous pour for best strength. If you must do separately, install rebar dowels at the joint to tie them together.
How wide should outdoor steps be?▾
Minimum 3 feet for residential single-track. 4 feet is more comfortable for two people side-by-side. Wider than 4 feet looks more like a stoop or platform.
Anti-slip texture on concrete steps?▾
Broom finish (drag a wide broom across wet concrete) is standard and free. Or apply non-slip topcoat after curing. Smooth-troweled outdoor steps become deadly when wet — don't do it.
