Pro tips
Works in basements. Unlike solid hardwood (which warps in below-grade moisture), engineered wood is dimensionally stable thanks to its plywood core. Use a moisture barrier underlayment on concrete.
Veneer thickness determines lifespan. Thin veneer (2mm or less): 1 refinish, 20-30 year life. Thick veneer (4-6mm): 2-3 refinishes, 40-50 year life. Pay for thicker veneer if you plan to live there 20+ years.
Three install methods. Float (most DIY, click-lock or T&G with adhesive at seams), glue-down (most stable, best feel underfoot), or staple/nail-down (over wood subfloor only). Float is the most common DIY approach.
Frequently asked questions
Engineered vs. solid hardwood?▾
Engineered has a real wood veneer top over plywood — stable, works in basements, 30-40 year life. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood — refinishable 5+ times, 100-year life, costs 20-30% more. Both look identical when installed.
How much engineered wood for a 12×14 room?▾
168 sq ft × 1.10 waste = 185 sq ft. About 9-12 boxes. Materials cost $750-$1,850 depending on veneer thickness and species.
Can engineered wood be refinished?▾
Depends on veneer thickness. 2mm or less: 1 light sanding, that's it. 4mm: 2-3 refinishes possible. 6mm: like solid hardwood — refinish indefinitely. Most builder-grade engineered is 2mm — basically not refinishable.
Engineered wood flooring cost?▾
Budget: $3-$5/sq ft. Mid (5mm veneer): $5-$8/sq ft. Premium (wide plank, thick veneer): $8-$12/sq ft. Add $3-$7/sq ft for pro install.
