Pro tips

Compact for 20% more. Crushed gravel compacts hard — toggle the compaction option and the calculator orders the extra material you need to hit your target depth after settling.

Driveways need 4-6 inches. Standard driveway base is 4 inches of #57 stone (3/4 inch crushed). For heavy vehicles, go 6 inches. Always pour over a compacted subgrade.

Bulk is half the cost over 1 yard. Bulk delivery runs $25-$50/yard. Bagged works out to $50-$100/yard equivalent. Above 1 cubic yard, bulk almost always wins.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?
Roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard for crushed gravel (about 2,800 lbs). Pea gravel is similar. Smaller stone like decomposed granite is slightly denser.
How much gravel for a 100 sq ft driveway?
At 4 inches deep: about 1.25 cubic yards (1.7 tons). At 6 inches deep: 1.85 cubic yards (2.6 tons). The calculator handles your exact size.
What's the difference between #57 and #2 gravel?
#57 is 3/4-inch crushed stone — most common for driveways, drainage, and base layers. #2 is larger (1-2 inch) used for heavy-duty bases or as drainage rock.
Do I need landscape fabric under gravel?
Yes for driveways and paths — it keeps the gravel from sinking into the soil and stops weeds. Cheap insurance at $0.10-$0.30 per sq ft.
