Pro tips

Don't skimp on the pad. A $0.50/sq ft cheap pad cuts carpet life in half. Spend $1-$2/sq ft on quality padding. The pad does more for comfort than the carpet itself — and it makes any carpet feel premium.

Stain-resistant matters more than fiber. Nylon vs. polyester vs. wool fights are mostly marketing. What matters: stain-resistant treatment (built-in vs. applied) and the carpet's twist level. Higher twist = longer-lasting.

Carpet on stairs costs extra. Stair carpeting is 2-3× the per-foot install cost of flat floors. Each tread requires a wrap, padding, and tackless strip work. Budget $30-$60 per stair installed.

Frequently asked questions

How much carpet for a 12×14 bedroom?
168 sq ft × 1.10 waste = 185 sq ft = 20.6 sq yards. Materials: $30-$160 (budget to premium). Pad: $20-$40. Install: $50-$150. Total: $100-$350.
Carpet cost per square foot?
Builder grade: $1-$2/sq ft. Mid-quality: $2-$5/sq ft. Premium (wool, high pile): $6-$15/sq ft. Install: $1-$4/sq ft. Pad: $0.50-$2/sq ft.
How long does carpet last?
Builder grade: 3-7 years. Mid-quality: 7-15 years. Premium with proper maintenance: 15-25 years. Heavy foot traffic and pets reduce lifespan; routine vacuuming and professional cleaning extends it.
Can I install carpet myself?
Possible but not recommended. Tools (stretcher, kicker, seam iron) are specialty rentals. Stretching the carpet correctly is hard. Most carpet retailers include install in the price — let them do it.
