Pro tips
4 inches for cars, 6 inches for trucks. Standard residential driveway: 4 inches over a 4-inch compacted gravel base. RV/truck driveways: 6 inches. Saving 2 inches isn't worth the cracking that follows.
Wire mesh is non-negotiable. Without reinforcement, driveways crack within 2-3 years from freeze/thaw and load cycling. 6×6 W1.4 wire mesh adds $0.30-$0.50 per sq ft and prevents 90% of cracking.
Control joints every 10-15 feet. Cut control joints 1 inch deep, every 10-15 feet along the length AND across the width. Cracks happen — control joints decide where.
