Pro tips

Slope away from the house. Pour patios with 1/4 inch per foot slope AWAY from any structure. Standing water at the foundation = basement leaks within a few years.

Consider stamped or stained. A plain gray slab is functional. Stamped (textured to look like stone/brick) adds $5-$10/sq ft. Stained adds color for $2-$5/sq ft. Either option dramatically upgrades curb appeal.

Pour in the morning. Don't pour concrete in mid-afternoon summer heat — it sets too fast. Morning pours give you working time. Aim for 60-80°F ambient, no direct hot sun on fresh concrete.

Frequently asked questions

How much concrete for a 15×15 patio at 4 inches?
15 × 15 × (4/12) = 75 cubic feet, or 2.78 cubic yards. With 10% waste: about 3 cubic yards. Bagged: 125 × 80-lb bags. Ready-mix is more practical at this volume.
Concrete patio cost per square foot?
Plain DIY: $4-$8/sq ft. Plain pro: $8-$14/sq ft. Stamped concrete: $12-$25/sq ft. Decorative patterns: $15-$30/sq ft.
How thick should a patio slab be?
4 inches is standard. 3 inches for very small, light-use patios; 5 inches for marginal soil or freeze-thaw climates. Over 4 inches needs reinforcement to prevent cracking.
Patio over existing concrete?
Possible — pour a 2-inch overlay if the existing slab is sound. Bond it with concrete bonding adhesive. Easier and cheaper than tearing out and re-pouring.
