4 feet wide is the comfort sweet spot. 3 feet works but two people can't pass. 4 feet handles couples walking side-by-side. 5+ feet starts to feel like a small road. Wider for entry walks, narrower for side paths.
Control joints every 4-5 feet. Sidewalks crack along control joints, not randomly. Cut every 4-5 feet for the cleanest look. Each panel becomes its own independent slab.
Surface texture matters. Smooth-troweled sidewalks are slick when wet. Broom finish (drag a wet broom perpendicular to the walking direction) gives slip resistance and is the standard public-walk finish.
