Pro tips

Half the cost of virgin limestone. Crushed concrete runs $15-$35/yard vs. $25-$50 for limestone. Made from demolished concrete recycled into aggregate. Functionally equivalent for most uses.

Best for driveways & base layers. Crushed concrete compacts harder than limestone — excellent for driveways, paver bases, and load-bearing fill. The leftover cement dust acts as a binder.

Avoid for visible surfaces. Crushed concrete looks like... crushed concrete (gray, mixed sizes, occasional rebar bits). Fine for driveways but not for decorative ground cover or visible patios.

Frequently asked questions

Is crushed concrete as strong as crushed limestone?
Yes — actually slightly stronger when compacted. The cement dust in crushed concrete continues to harden when wet, creating a near-pavement surface over time.
How much crushed concrete for a 100 sq ft driveway?
At 4 inches deep: 1.25 cubic yards (about 1.7 tons). At 6 inches: 1.85 cubic yards. Calculator handles your exact size.
Does crushed concrete have rebar in it?
Modern recycled crushed concrete is processed through magnets that remove most rebar. Occasionally small pieces sneak through — fine for buried applications, less ideal for top-surface use.
Can I use crushed concrete around plants?
Not recommended — the alkaline residue (pH 10-12) leaches into soil and can harm acid-loving plants. For garden beds and around shrubs, use crushed gravel or limestone instead.
