Pro tips

Driveway base layer of choice. Crushed limestone (#2 or #57) is the standard driveway and paver base material. Compacts to nearly solid, drains well, locks in place under wheel loads.

Layer 4 inches for driveways. 4 inches of compacted limestone over a prepared subgrade for typical driveways. 6 inches for heavy vehicles. Always pour over compacted dirt — don't skip subgrade prep.

Allow 20% for compaction. Limestone compacts hard — a loose yard becomes about 0.8 yard compacted. Toggle the compaction option so you order enough.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between #2 and #57 limestone?
#2 is larger (1-3 inch) — used for heavy-duty base layers and drainage. #57 is 3/4 inch — most common for driveways, paver bases, and general aggregate use.
How heavy is a cubic yard of crushed limestone?
About 2,700 lbs (1.35 tons) per cubic yard. Standard pickup truck holds about 1 yard. Don't overload — limestone is heavier than it looks.
Can I pour concrete over crushed limestone?
Yes — limestone is a standard base under concrete slabs. 4 inches of compacted limestone, then 4 inches of concrete is a typical garage floor or patio build-up.
Will crushed limestone change soil pH?
Slightly. Limestone is alkaline (pH 9-10) and can raise surrounding soil pH over years. Not an issue for driveways and paths, but avoid using as mulch near acid-loving plants (blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons).
