Pro tips

9 inches minimum for safety. Engineered playground mulch needs 9 inches depth to meet ASTM F1292 fall-protection standards (up to 8-foot fall heights). 12 inches for taller equipment.

EWF vs. wood chips: not the same. Engineered wood fiber is processed specifically for playgrounds — uniform size, no twigs or wires. Generic wood chips don't meet safety standards. Don't substitute.

Top off annually. Foot traffic and weather compact playground mulch by 30-50% per year. Add 2-3 inches fresh every spring to maintain the safety depth.

Frequently asked questions

Why 9 inches deep for playground mulch?
ASTM F1292 testing shows 9 inches of engineered wood fiber absorbs impact from 8-foot falls (the max for backyard play sets). Less depth = less protection. Commercial playgrounds with taller equipment use 12 inches.
How much playground mulch for a 20×20 area?
20 × 20 = 400 sq ft. At 9 inches: 400 × (9/12) ÷ 27 = 11 cubic yards. That's about 5,500 lbs. Bulk delivery is much easier than 270 bags.
Engineered wood fiber vs. rubber playground mulch?
EWF is cheaper ($35-$60/yard) but compacts and needs annual top-up. Rubber is 4-5× more expensive but lasts 10+ years with minimal maintenance. EWF for budget, rubber for low-maintenance.
Can I just use regular wood chips?
Not for safety-rated installations. Regular chips have variable size, sharp edges, occasional twigs/debris, and don't compact predictably for fall absorption. Use EWF specifically.
