Pro tips

10-year lifespan, premium price. Rubber mulch costs 3-5× more than wood mulch upfront, but lasts 10-20 years vs. 1-2 for wood. Lifetime cost is often lower.

Playground safety: 6 inches minimum. Engineered rubber playground mulch needs 6 inches depth to meet ASTM fall-protection standards. For 8-foot fall heights, go 9 inches.

Doesn't compost, doesn't fade. Unlike wood mulch which decomposes and needs replacing, rubber stays the same color and depth for 10+ years. Holds heat in summer though — not ideal under direct sun for plants.

Frequently asked questions

Is rubber mulch safe for kids?
Engineered playground rubber mulch is ASTM-certified for fall protection up to 16 feet at 9-inch depth. Tire-derived rubber (TDR) is what most playgrounds use. Avoid generic shredded tires which can have wire fragments.
Rubber mulch vs. wood mulch cost over 10 years?
Wood mulch: $50-$80 every 1-2 years = $400-$800 over 10 years. Rubber mulch: $200-$400 once, lasts 10+ years. Rubber wins long-term.
Does rubber mulch attract bugs?
No. Bugs eat decomposing wood; rubber doesn't decompose, so no termites, ants, or carpenter bees. Significantly more pest-resistant than wood mulch.
Can plants grow in rubber mulch?
Rubber mulch doesn't break down to feed soil like wood does — plants don't get nutrients from it. Use it for paths, playgrounds, and decorative areas, not active garden beds.
