Pro tips

Free wood chips from tree services. Many arborists give away wood chips for free — call local tree services and ask if you're on their drop list. Catch is they show up unannounced with a truck load. Perfect for large areas.

3-4 inches for paths. Wood chip paths need 3-4 inches to stay walkable. Lay landscape fabric underneath to keep chips from working into the soil.

Don't pile against tree trunks. Wood chips banked against tree bark trap moisture and cause rot. Keep a 4-6 inch gap between chips and the trunk — looks like a donut, not a volcano.

Frequently asked questions

Wood chips vs. shredded mulch?
Chips are larger (2-4 inch chunks), cheaper, last 2-3 years before breaking down. Shredded mulch is finer, knits together better visually, breaks down in 1-2 years. Chips for paths and large areas; shredded for garden beds.
How long do wood chips last?
2-3 years for chunky chips. They break down slowly and become great soil amendment over time. Top dress with fresh chips every couple years for fresh appearance.
Are wood chips good for vegetable gardens?
Around the perimeter, yes. Avoid in active planting beds — they tie up nitrogen as they decompose, stunting vegetables. Use compost or composted wood chips for veggie beds.
Can I use fresh wood chips right away?
Yes for paths and around established trees. For garden beds, age them 3-6 months first to avoid nitrogen tie-up. Or apply a thick layer of compost beneath the chips.
